As high schoolers, it can often feel like we spend all day reading textbooks and primary sources. After the bell rings, many of us are hesitant to pick up a book and start reading for pleasure. However, if we can get ourselves past reading fatigue, we'll find that it is one of the best ways to learn more about the careers we are interested in. If you're looking to expand your thinking with some career-related reads, here are a few of my suggestions:

If you're interested in healthcare:

When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi

The Soul of Medicine: Tales from the Bedside by Sherwin Nuland, MD

This Won't Hurt a Bit (And Other White Lies) by Michelle Au, MD

If you're interested in education:

Educated by Tara Westover

Work Hard. Be Nice. by Jay Mathews

Losing My Faculties: A Teacher’s Story by Brendan Halpin

If you're interested in non-profits:

The Blue Sweater: Bridging the Gap Between Rich and Poor in an Interconnected World by Jacqueline Novogratz

Do the KIND Thing: Think Boundlessly, Work Purposefully, Live Passionately by Daniel Lubetsky

The Everyday Philanthropist: A Better Way to Make a Better World by Dan Pallotta

If you're interested in business:

The Ride of a Lifetime by Robert Iger

Shoe Dog by Phil Knight

The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben Horowitz

If you're interested in tech:

Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence by Max Tegmark

Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future by Ashlee Vance

Chaos Monkeys: Obscene Fortune and Random Failure in Silicon Valley by Antonio Garcia Martinez
