Frontline workers in the fight against COVID-19 are inspiring the next generation

Originally aired on KMGH-TV – April 19, 2020

Healthcare workers are working tirelessly to help those afflicted by the coronavirus. The signs of appreciation are everywhere, but they’re also inspiring the youth.

“I think they’re really brave and doing things not everyone can do,” high school student Veronica Palmer said.

Palmer is a sophomore at Destination Careers Academy of Colorado.

“I am in our health care career pathway, studying to become a nurse,” she said.

She’s wanted to be a nurse for a while, but this reaffirms her why.

“It’s making me stronger what I want to do—seeing these nurses put their lives on the line, working really long hours. It makes me excited to go into nursing,” she added.

She still needs to go to nursing school after high school, but she’s learned a lot on her path so far, including learning basic intubation—something essential as part of the battle against COVID-19, but just a small part of the job they do.

“They help keep us safe, and they basically take care of us, so it highlights the need,” she said.

The need for more heroes, doing their job to help, and show why students like Veronica want to be like them.

“Huge inspiration to me. I love seeing everyone out there helping, and it just makes me excited to go out there in it,” she said.
