No matter how old you are, finding a job can be difficult. However, when you’re a teenager finding their first job, you’re bound to commit a job search faux pas. If you’re currently searching for a job, here are a few mistakes you may be making.
1. Your resume or cover letter is generic
When a recruiter is reading your application, you want them to think, “Wow! What a perfect candidate!” To make sure that they’re awestruck, make sure that your application reflects the job posting. You can present yourself as a strong candidate by reusing specific words from the posting in your resume and cover letter.
2. You haven’t adequately researched the company
Whether you’re in an interview or writing a cover letter, you must have a strong understanding of the company you’re applying to work with. When reading their website, pay attention to their company values and mission. By doing so, you can align your application and interview answers with what they’re looking for.
3. You aren’t networking
While job postings are a great way to find jobs, they shouldn’t be the only way you’re trying to find a job. Contacting your existing network or simply reaching out to the contact email at the bottom of a company’s website are other viable ways to find opportunities. Being proactive is essential to a successful job search!
4. You forget to follow-up
Although it may feel awkward at first, be sure to follow up with a company recruiter after submitting your application or your interviewer following an interview. Doing so is a great way to show your continued interest in the position and make them remember you. If you really want to go above and beyond, you could even send them a hand-written thank-you note!
