Your Pathway To General Management

Aug 25, 2020

It takes a special kind of high school student to be a leader. You might not be a fan of math class, but a leader isn’t always the one who is solving every equation. If you’re the kind of student who always has your eye on the prize and offers help to others when they need it most, then a career in General Management might be for you.

At Destinations Career Academy, your pathway is tailored to your individual goals. With career readiness education (CRE), discover your true passion and develop skills in high-demand jobs while gaining confidence, experience, and industry-recognized certifications* along the way. Whether you want to be a Public Relations Manager or a Real Estate Appraiser, your future starts here.

Preparing for success

From the moment you enroll in our tuition-free CRE program**, you’ll be equipped with the tools and support you need to shine. Feel confident as you transition to online high school with Strong Start—our one-of-a-kind onboarding program. Meet your homeroom teacher, and learn your way around Class Connects before your first day. Within your first week, attend orientation live, or on-demand depending on your school. As a first-year student, you’ll also be required to take a career explorations class that highlights the many careers available and identifies pathways that align with your interests. Strong Start is the first of many resources available to you during high school. In addition, you’ll work with:

  • Teachers who offer support during lessons and outside of classes, while also making sure that you’re staying on track of your career goals.
  • School counselorswho create your graduation plan and help you determine which career might be right for you.
  • Career counselorswho determine which electives align best with your goals and provide supportin obtaining internships and work experiences.

Learning new skills

From Business Communications to Restaurant Management, the General Management pathway allows you to fill your schedule with classes that you’re passionate about. Many courses—like Entrepreneurship and Marketing—involve project-based learning, which allows you to solve real-world problems while collaborating with your classmates. In a Business Consulting class at Destinations Career Academy at Florida Online School, students brainstormed solutions to real business challenges, like:

  • Managing inventory
  • Increasing sales for a specific target audience
  • Generating positive customer reviews

As a part of the hands-on experience, they visited a local bike shop to learn about business management, IT, sales, and more. Dr. Marisa Martinez, the Academic Administrator at Destinations Career Academy at Florida Online School, shared:

Depending on the school, you can also take college-level classes thanks to partnerships with local colleges*. For example, Dr. Kristin Stewart, head of Destinations Career Program of Ohio Virtual Academy, shared that “(they) have approximately 50 colleges right now, some universities, some colleges, that we partner with (for college credit opportunities)”.

Earning the certifications

Have you ever wondered why someone who is considered a “specialist” or “certified” to do their job seems so impressive? That’s because they are–and at Destinations, you can be, too, with industry-recognized certifications*, like:

  • ACT National Career Readiness Certification (NCRC)
  • NOCTI General Managemento
  • A*S*K Entrepreneurship/Managemento
  • Microsoft Office Specialist–Excelo
  • Microsoft Office Specialist–Word

While Destinations does not facilitate these exams, our courses can help you prepare to take them during or after high school.

Hearing from professionals

While it might come as a surprise, not all Destinations classes are teacher-led. With Nepris, a platform that connects industry specialiststo the classroom, you can hear from business professionals like accountants, entrepreneurs, and marketing experts. Our annual Job Shadow Week also gives you the chance to shadow specialists from local businesses, nonprofits, and global companies. During the week, partake in:

  • Job Demonstrations: Watch specialists performreal-life work tasks.
  • Workspace Tours: See the diverse work environments throughout the industry.
  • Financial Literacy: Learn money-saving tips and investment basics from industry experts.

Putting knowledge into practice

So, you’ve learned the ropes and now is your chance to see if you can climb. Destinations allows you to build time into your schedule for apprenticeships and internships using Tallo, a web-based networking platform that connects you with companies within your career field*.

Our classes have also inspired many students to start a business of their own. For example, Rain created Bakeology, where she bakes treats for those in her community. Through her marketing class and FBLA club, she learned the fundamentals of finance, while her Digital Art classes helped her to better design her baked goods and website.

Having fun along the way

You’ll also have the opportunity to partake in more of what you love after hours. With business-specific career clubs, you can network with other students across the state and travel to national competitions or conferences. Depending on your school*, you can participate in:

  • Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA)
  • Business Professionals of America (BFA)
  • Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)

Destinations offers activities for every student and their individual interests. In fact, you can enjoy the same level of social fun as students in a traditional school setting when attending class online. Amy Johnson, Head of Destinations Career Academy at Arkansas Virtual Academy, mentioned:

Whether you want to pursue General Management or Accounting, Destinations can help you jump start your career by providing you with the skills, experiences, and connections needed to succeed.
