Letter to the Editor: Career Pathways Good Option for High Schoolers
Originally published in the Northglenn Thorton Sentinel and Westminster Window – July 26, 2018
Career Technical Education (CTE) programs are an innovative solution for preparing my generation to enter the ever-evolving workforce. For my freshman year of high school, I enrolled in the Destinations Academy of Colorado (CODCA), a CTE-focused online school. I may only be going into 10th grade this fall, but I dream of one day becoming a doctor, so the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) pathway was the perfect fit for me to immerse myself in the medical field. My mom, a CNA, knew that CODCA would lead me to success. The CTE program allows me access to courses which focus on my chosen career pathway as part of a rigorous high school curriculum.
After completing my first year in online school, the challenging academic coursework and CNA pathway introduced me to many unique opportunities. I currently serve as the president of CODCA’s Health Occupations Students of America chapter, where I enhance my leadership skills and collaborate with likeminded peers. Next year, I will further my skillset in the medical field as a student volunteer at a local hospital. By attending a CTE-focused online school, I gain valuable experience for my future career while I’m still in high school.
Thanks to the CNA program, I am confident that I am on the right path to becoming a leader in health sciences. My peers at CODCA are exploring their talents in other fields, like IT and business. CTE programs are preparing my generation to thrive after high school in the 21st century workforce.
